Thai Express is the best thing to happen to my neighborhood in years. Where else can you get a delicious Thai meal for $5, cooked fresh and served quickly? Nowhere else in Grand Rapids, at least. The atmosphere is nothing special, but the staff is friendly and efficient, and at these great prices I am not going to complain. I usually get my food to go, but you can also dine in if you like.

Whatever Thai Express lacks in atmosphere, it makes up for in delicious, affordable food & great service.

My husband and I went for lunch and it was packed. However we got seated and served right away. All the people that worked in there are super friendly and helpful. The place was easy to find in a plaza. Their entrance is on the back. You can tell they really take good care of this place and think about their customers. As you walk in to the place they have a space heater sitting next to the entrance to make sure people don't get chills from it being opened. I ordered pad tai while my husband ordered a green beans and chicken dish. All the lunch comes with a spring roll and choice of soup or salad. It also comes with a dessert, choice of cheese cake or ice cream (ice cream sandwich). Yes, a lot of food. We also ordered fresh spring roll that was excellent. The spring roll that came with the lunch was fried fresh so it was super hot when it came to our table. The ginger rice soup was good too. You can definitely tell and taste the freshness of all the ingredients. I like that you get to choose the spiciness of your dish from scale 1-10. I love that you get free refills for the sweet thai ice tea. Best part, we spend less than $18 and we were stuffed. I am 8 months pregnant by the way. Its pretty hard to fill me up but this lunch certainly did.

Very fresh. Great flavor. Friendly service. A great little Thai restaurant in grand rapids!

If fresh Thai cuisine is what you are looking for this is the place. Beware, if you eat here once other restaurants wont be so appealing anymore. It's like the difference between gas station coffee and Rowsters coffee. It's a step in the direction to develop a palate for high quality Thai food.

good stuff. quick take out service. very large purchases. the noodles weren't bad but weren't amazing either. dingy inside, though.

This place is no joke. I nearly choked due to the attempted inhalement of my dish. With anything you get, a 6 rating is the perfect hotness.

Exceptional food, great service, very inexpensive...the Pad Thai and Red Curry were phenomenal.

This restaurant may not look like much from the outside, tucked away as it is inside one of the more depressing strip malls in the Grand Rapids area, but don't let looks deceive you: it is an excellent choice for Thai food lovers. I went with my wife and I got the pad thai while she got one of their curry dishes. Both were excellent. My only minor complaint is that there didn't seem to be much of a difference in spiciness between our dishes, even though my wife ordered hers with a spiciness level of 4 out of 10 and I ordered mine with a 7. We both really enjoyed our dishes, though, and we both had enough left over for lunch the next day. At around $16 total for both meals, that's a bargain. The dinners even come with desserts, although the ice cream sandwiches and mini cheesecakes being offered were decidedly not authentic Thai food. The staff was very friendly, and I look forward to going back there again.

My wife and I are originally from Grand Rapids, but now live in Chicago, and we still have yet to find a better place for Thai! The people are excellent, the food is superb, especially the spring rolls, and the complimentary cheesecake is fantastic. We wish we could take this back to Chicago with us! This place is a gem!

I had been a longtime fan of Erb Thai, and was looking for something that wasn't quite as far from my home. I found Thai Express, in the Town & Country Plaza, and I am in love! I had the Pad Prik, and it was amazing. My friend had something else, (the name escapes me right now), but she raved about her dish as well. The food was fresh, the portions were sizable, and the price is reasonable. I couldn't be happier! The employees were all friendly, and cordial, and seemed truly happy to be there. We visited on a Friday night, after the dinner rush, and I was pleased to see that there were several tables filled, with happy patrons chatting and eating away... it was a sight that touched me. I'm happy to say that I have a favorite neighborhood Thai place now!

Great! One of the only true Thai restaurants in town, most of the "thai" places are in no way shape or form thai, you get a very loose rendition of what they think thai food is. Awesome food and staff!

went here because its close and i saw it had a lot of high reviews. I'm kinda upset that I've lived about 2 blocks away for 6 years and haven't gone here before. this was my first time having thai food and i can't wait to go back! i got tons of food for my 8$ i almost couldn't finish it!

This place is great. Only downfall is it's not open after 8pm on weekdays and not at all on Sunday; Those are usually the times I crave Thai. Their Pad Thai is some of the best I've had and I've sampled a lot of Thai places. It's so good that I have a hard time ordering anything else, though the other dishes I've had have been great as well. The ladies that run this place are very friendly and usually know my order just from my number showing up on caller ID. I've never had poor service whether I dine in or carry out. Food is always ready in 15 minutes or less.

Great little hole in the wall thai restaurant. Food was great, portions are huge, waitress was super friendly!

This is as good, if not better than many authentic Thai restaurants in the LA / Hollywood area. Curry pad thai is a pretty unique menu item and was very good. Also had the chicken sweet basil rice dish which was tasty but there were a lot of vegetables compared to the amount of chicken. Overall service was very friendly and quick. Portion size was decent. Taste was fantastic. I would say a tad bit pricey (approx. $9 per dinner entree). You get a choice between an ice cream sandwich or a small cube of cheesecake for dessert as well as fortune cookies. Note: you can choose how spicy you want each dish on a scale from 1 to 10, with 10 being the spiciest. We ordered both dishes at "6" and it was pretty darn spicy, and we can handle spice. I'd definitely come back if I'm ever in Grand Rapids.

Had the opportunity to do a two day review. Stopped for dinner one night and then lunch the very next day due to an appointment nearby. I have eaten dinner here before. Service took a while to take my order and the table that came in after ordered first. They only offer the curry noodles as a dinner portion so I went with that. Ordered medium which was just enough to get a little sweat going for me. Also ordered combo protein which included chicken, pork and tofu. Curry was a little on the watery side, I like thicker sauces. Included was a spring roll app and for dessert your choice of bite size cheesecake or an ice cream sandwich. This was a nice touch. Lunch menu I went with peanut curry, noodles instead of rice and chicken. Portion size was ok for the price, but wasn't filling for me. The cheesecake bite afterwards made up for it because I usually do not have dessert at lunch. Spring roll was also included for an app. Fast and fresh, cute dessert, nice little local place.

Way better food than the name of Thai Express might indicate! Top notch Thai food, no question! I got the Drunken Noodle, my wife ordered something by its number, not the name of the dish, so I've forgotten what it was (lol), my sister got a soup dish. Drunken Noodles was amazing! My wife's was very good and she definitely enjoyed it. My sister liked hers as well. The Thai tea is so good, and they have free refills (how amazing!). They also bring out a spring roll before the main dish, which was steaming-hot and tasty. On top of all this you get an ice cream sandwich bite or cheesecake bite, plus fortune cookie, and after-dinner mints. All this (aside from the Thai tea) is included in the price for the meal, which is already very reasonable. I've easily paid more for lesser Thai and lesser portions. Please be aware--- they use the 1-10 heat scale, but not the one that seems more common in MI - a legit Thai heat scale. I got a 4, and I'd say it was even a touch spicier than a 4 in AZ! Will definitely be missing this place back in AZ!

This was my first experience with Thai food and all I can say is "WOW"! From the point you step into the restaurant you are the boss. The kitchen staff loves to serve you, and has a genuine love for their customers. Lunch began with a simple salad that had a light, sweet dressing. The spring roll was hot from the frier with a crunchy, thin shell. For the main course I went with drunken noodles with chicken and beef (n3) and a spicy level of three. I was only able to eat 2/3 of my plate, but was really wanting to push the rest in. As an added bonus, you get either a piece of cheese cake or ice cream after the meal. I took the cheesecake to go. I was so fully from everything else. I will be back, and next time I think I'll try the curry.

Thai express yet again proves that hole-in-the-wall ethnic restaurants are the best. Do not come here to see beautiful decor or a luxe environment. The food and the service is the star. Thai Express is my favorite Thai place in the area, easily. Anything I have ever had is amazing. Portion sizes are pretty big, if you get a soup or appetizer as well, you will probably be taking home a full meal size of leftovers of your entree (which in my opinion is awesome). Free refills on thai iced tea are great, plus the meals come with a little dessert- ice cream sandwich or a mini cheesecake. I have never had a problem with spice level- i request mild and get it. Service is always great! The woman who typically serves and works the counter is friendly as can be, always happy to see anyone who ventures in. Service with a smile is almost an understatement because she is so genuine about it. Overall, I say to choose this based on value, taste, and service over other thai choices in the area. Don't necessarily drive out of your way, but if you're near Kentwood, it's a must-do.

Thanks Yelp for this one. From the outside I was skeptical but once inside we were greeted by a friendly woman and the restaurant smelled great. We were there at lunch time and we both had great meals.

Food here was delicious!! Had the spring rolls, pad Thai, and chicken satay w peanut sauce. Food is made to order. Would have given all 5 stars if I didn't have to ask for silverware, napkins & refill but I am picky about service. Server was friendly and quickly fulfilled our requests.

  • Tyler D.

Best Thai food in GR, hands down. Super homespun atmosphere that feels low-key and inviting. This is a true mom-and-pop shop. With your entree they give you a soup, spring roll (veg available), main course and dessert. Humble joint with simple but humbling food and people. Being in Kentwood, bikeability is non-existent. You couldn't pay me to ride down Kalamazoo Ave at dinner time -- might as well just throw myself in front of the traffic and get it over with. If you're gonna bike here from the north, take the sidewalk once you get on Kzoo.

  • Jacquelyn D.

I have been coming here since soon after they opened and have tried other Thai restaurants in GR - none compare. This is the best Thai restaurant in GR. Now maybe some prefer the fancy wooden floors and dark decor of the downtown Thai restaurants and the fancy high prices - i went to those and did not even finish the food. I'm so glad Thai food doesn't have to be opaque thick chewy noodles like at some restaurants - Thai Express is amazing - always fresh, always tasty. Find a meal that's right for you - there is a lot to choose from. The Thai Express team is always very friendly and accomodating even when we bring large groups on short notice. Thanks ladies for bringing the restaurant to GR!

Just tried this place for lunch. Now I realize my results may be skewed because I had take out, and did not sit in the restaurant. Is it good? Yes. Were there things that could have been better? Yes. Mainly my largest complaint is that the rice was over cooked and mushy. Granted this could be because it was steaming hot when placed in the to go container, which is why I'm not harping on it all that much. I got the Panang Curry. The curry was thin, flavorful, and appropriately spiced (I got a 7) which is what I'd consider a medium plus compared to my other thai experiences. So I'll be going back again, and also looking to try other places in the area before picking my go to thai restaurant.

Some of the best Pad Thai curry I've ever had! Service was wonderful. Everything was hot and fresh. Can't wait to go back!

I was very impressed with the cuisine at Thai Express. Their name does not do them justice. I had the Gang Dang with tofu for lunch. The coconut sauce had an undescribably delicate taste. Thats about all I can say. I'll be bringing the family next time.

  • Stuart B.

Perhaps the best Thai food in the greater Grand Rapids area. The atmosphere is very casual but the food is first rate. The restaurant is a hot spot for weekday lunches especially for Steelcase office people at HQ right down the street. Restaurant is closed Sundays and has free WiFi.

My favorite Thai Food place in the country. Hands down!! This place is NOT fancy. It is home cooking Thai. So don't expect what I would like to call "white people princess thai". "White people princess thai" is the kind that has a lot of fancy cut vegetables. The kind that is OVER sauced. The kind that people find themselves impressed with how the rice is formed on the plate. ... I love it...LOVE IT...LOVE IT.......if you don't love it.....you suck!!

  • Saniya S.

This place is really nice. The prices are cheap, the portions are big, and the food is really good. I actually thought the pad thai was okay, I think I've had better. I thought the red curry was really good and the curyy fried rice. If you are into fish, you must try chu chee pla which was a tilapia fillet in red curry, it was out of this world! I will definitely go back and try more things from their menu! The owners were really nice they gave my family and I vegetable rolls and ice cream sandwiches on the house!

Las Vegas Thai restaurants have spoiled me. My fav local LV chain is Archie's Thai. Trying to find those tastes here and this was 1st place I tried. I like bold spicy food so order things at least level 5 heat. I got two dishes for takeout, Pad Thai noodles and a brown sauce dish more Chinese than Thai. Prices were about $8 on each dinner. Service was good although premises is tiny it was neat and clean and food is made pretty much in front of you behind the counter. REVISIONS: Because it is close to home I did return about 5 times in 2014 and revised my rating. Found several dishes that they prepare well like the spicy eggplant which has become a fav. Went w visitors who currently reside in Thailand in Oct 2014 and they thought the food very authentic..

Amazing food!! Spring rolls are awesome and the glass noodles are delicious! Fast and friendly service a plus!! You can't go wrong with this place!! The resturant is not fancy but the food sure is good!!!

I love Thai Express! The service Is fast and friendly! I've never had a bad dish there. The spring rolls and dipping sauce are the best I've had in GR. I'm a fan of the noodle dishes but the peanut curry is also tasty. Prices are reasonable too.

Great food, friendly atmosphere. Convenient for takeout, and we love sharing "our find" with friends who come to town. I was a participant in 2010 for their spicy food contes -- truly a memorable experience and a great example of how well the owners treat the patrons.

  • Valerie L.

Good Thai food. Not the best I've ever had, but I would go back. We started with the tom yum (lemongrass soup). It was my least favorite item we ordered-- the broth tasted like plain chicken broth with a few chili flakes thrown in. I didn't taste lemongrass at all. I had pad thai with tofu as my entrée. The tofu was cooked perfectly, but the rice noodles were a bit over cooked, mushy, and greasy at the bottom. My husband had the drunken noodles with chicken which were really tasty-- the large basil leaves gave it great flavor! Each meal comes with a spring roll and dessert (ice cream sandwich or bite of cheesecake) plus a fortune cookie & mints. The prices are very reasonable, and the thai iced tea or coffee comes with free refills!! Although, I thought my thai iced tea was a bit too sweet. The staff was very friendly, and the atmosphere was casual. I always like a restaurant where I can see the staff cooking-- the woks are visible from the dining room.

Thai Express is my favorite Thai place in the area. You know you've been to a spot one too many times when they know your order by heart. The portions are good, the food is excellent and the staff is always super friendly. Spice chart here is ranged 1-10, 1 being mild 10 being the devil's breath. I get 3 and that's just enough kick for me,couldn't imagine 10 yikes.

  • Kori Y.

Okay don't let the appearance or neighborhood fool you. If you like Thai food go to this place. Some of the best Thai food I've had. I have successfully eaten my way through the entire menu. It was all good, never had a meal I din't like.

Had just landed to be home for the holidays and Yelped Thai restaurants near airport. Thai Express had 4.5 Stars so I had to eat there. Lunch portions are perfect size with choice of decent tasting soup or salad. My Thai ice tea tasted funny though. My guest didn't like their meal but I believe she ordered wrong dish. Food was good to me. Customer service was the best I've experienced in a long time!!!! As a party of two, they asked us to move to a smaller table and offered a free appetizer. They brought 2. They didn't charge us for my guests meal or my Thai ice tea and were persistent in trying to get my guest to order something else. She just wasn't in the mood. The check came with mints served in a tiny bowl.....so cute. The bite size cheesecake (or ice cream) that was also part of the meal was tasty too. I tipped very well. I would DEF go back on my next visit home.

I love Thai food is this little mom & pop, no frills place, was awesome! I'm visiting the area and found them through Yelp, with very good reviews. ...now I know why! The Sweetened Iced Thai coffee was just right! (And I don't use sweeteners in my beverages!) Free refills too! My appetizer was Fried Tofu. The accompanying chili sauce added sweetness but no (real) heat. The sweet sauce for the spring roll was light and not overly sweet. My entree was Pad Phet. Oh Gosh! It was awesome! I was stuffed; took leftovers. My meal ended with a small cube of cheesecake (other option was ice cream). The bill came with a standard fortune cookie and a small dish of butter mints! Definitely the place to visit if in the area and wanting Thai food. Meal incl the spring roll, entree and sweet/dessert at end. ...for $8.95! A true bargain! Oh yes, free wi-fi; ask for the password. The ladies working there were friendly and welcoming. Came back next day for lunch. Had the Peanut Curry, it was great!

I was in town for work and my boss and I needed a quick place for lunch. Yelp directed us here- if this is a 5 star Thai restaurant in Grand Rapids, I'm sticking to Chicago. This was the equivalent of Panda Express for Thai food. It was fine. Not terrible, but certainly not good. But it's cheap- seemed like most people were there for lunch from the office. Service was fast. Food is cheap. That's about all I can say.

The food is fantastic. The atmosphere is the only negative, just a bit run down. Great service and friendly too.

    (4)
  • Katy C.

Thai Express is a nice option for lunch if you work nearby. The service is always fast whenever I go here. I've had the curry pad Thai, which is drier (less saucy) than I like, and the drunken noodles, which were very good, flavorful but not overly salty. You get a salad, spring roll and dessert (cheesecake bite or ice cream) when you dine in. This is not the best Thai food in the greater Grand Rapids area, but it makes for a good lunch, especially if you want to change it up a bit. I come here about once a month.

I've been going there for the past 8 years and have never been disappointed. These ladies work extremely hard and put all effort into cooking the food and making it authentic. Order whatever you want and it will be great!

You know a place has has it going on when you casually ask some nearby coworkers if they are interested in grabbing some Thai food for lunch, and everyone within earshot is like "THAI EXPRESS? LET ME GET MY COAT!" I suggest dining in, because at no extra cost, you get a salad, the crunchiest spring role of your life, ice cream, a fortune cookie and mints, in addition to your delicious and generously-portioned entree. I really can't recommend Thai Express any higher. You should probably eat there for lunch today.

  • Mikhaelah O.

The service is earnest and happy. The food is fantastic - portions and prices are right. I love the peanut curry, red, curry, hot and sour coconut soup with shrimp, and the fantastic spring rolls served with entrees. Cheesecake dessert included for dining in! Love this place.

  • Brad S.

This is my favorite Thai restaurant of all. I have been enough times that even after being away for months, the owner knows my order. Exceptional service and great Thai food. I recently moved from the area, and this is the place I miss the most about where I used to live.

    (5)
  • Jesse G.

We eat here once a week, the service is amazing and the food is all great. The make their spring rolls and dressings from scratch and each meal is made fresh to order. Our favorite part is the included dessert in each lunch! Big recommendation here if you have never eaten Thai food or if you love it!

  • Michael B.

Wonderful green curry! This is the *ONLY* restaurant in "Bland Rapids" that has ever been able to go BEYOND my heat tolerance (I asked for heat level 50. It was really good, but I needed a few glasses of water for that one! Now I ask for heat level 40 and it's perfect.) Very small dining area. I believe that most of their business is take out.

    (4)
  • Ashley F.

If I could give them 100 stars I would do it gladly. This not just the best Thai food I've ever had, it's also one of my very favorite restaurants to frequent. The staff is so lovely and the atmosphere is casual and comfortable. The food is absolutely divine and it's all cooked fresh. It's small so you may wait longer when it's busy, but it's completely worth it. That's the difference between going somewhere that cooks your food opposed to somewhere that just heats it up. It's amazing EVERY single time!

    (5)
  • Tasia T.

Excellent food. Excellent service! The staff gives 100% service with all sorts of perfect touches. The food all tastes and looks incredibly fresh. We were given fresh rice to go with our to go boxes and mini cheese cakes or ice cream sandwiches are included for desert. Plus we got a cute bowl of mints with our fortune cookie!! So good!

    (5)
  • Shannon M.

Absolutely the sweetest staff ever. 5+ stars for that. Unfortunately, the food left much to be desired. My shrimp pad thai was ok....not much flavor but the amount of shrimp was adequate. The tom yum soup was very disappointing. It was basically chicken broth with some vegetables and tofu...no galangal, lemongrass or lime leaf in sight. Maybe I'll try something different next time and it will be better.

  • Russell B.

This place is great. The food is super flavorful and the staff is always friendly. My favorites are the glass noodles and the drunken noodles, although I have never had anything bad and the menu is HUGE. The spring rolls are too die for. I love this place. This is the best Thai food I have ever had.

  • Ross T.

This is my favorite place on the planet! The food is amazing you get large portions And the curries are authentic. The Thai tea isn't just the best it's unlimited refills. I might be wrong but it's the only Thai around with bottomless Thai coffee/tea. Bonus salad for lunch. I'm not sure what that dressing is but it's really good. And the best part is the price. If the free Cheese cake or Ice cream sandwich isn't enough I'm not sure what is. The only minor issue would be the limited seating, so beat the rush or get it to go. I even had them cater my wedding and it was a hit I had so many people ask me where I got the food. Being vegetarian this is one of my few "safe" places to eat. The tofu is good and I've never had anything funny in my food. Last of all the owner and staff are friendly good people so give them a try.

We visit Grand Rapids a few times every month for work, and at times we stay in town to grab some grub. Surprise, surprise we were craving Thai food so I whipped out my phone and looked up the nearest restaurant. We ordered springrolls, which were pretty good. The veggies inside were fresh and crisp, which is always a huge plus. For our entrees I strayed from my usual path of curries because I felt like pad thai, and my husband went for the pad cashew. Every now and then he gets a veggie kick and wants something with a ton of veggies in it, rather than a pad see ewe (with just broccoli) or kow pad. Both were actually pretty good, but nothing to write home about. The pad thai seemed a little sweet for my taste, while at the other time the pad cashew was lacking something. Perhaps it was lacking the sweetness that was instead on my plate, or some savory-ness - either way, I could not quite put my finger on it but something semed 'off'. I was a little sad to be honest, because I was very hungry and had high hopes because of the ratings on Yelp. We might be back, eventhough the restaurant was small and kinda dingy (and we have experienced much better Thai food elsewhere). We are just in the GR area too often, which means it is inevitable for us to not be craving thai food one time or another. I do not really like leaving reviews after just one visit (unless it stood out one way or the other), but am willing to try this place again and hopefully edit my review into the four star range. Who knows. So many people cannot possibly be wrong? A cute sidenote about this place is that the kitchen is open, so if you sit nearby you can watch the little old lady prepare your meal!

We found this place on a whim. In search of something on the fresh side while traveling can be difficult. Stumbled upon a yelp review and decided to try it out. So glad we did. The fresh springrolls were expertly crafted and the sweet and sour dipping sauce was so flavorful. It was so pale in color, I didnt think much of it. As soon as I dipped the spring roll in it, BAM! flavor explosion. The waitress (who I can assume was the owner) was wonderful and attentive. The meal finishes off with Wedding mints, a fortune cookie, and a mini cheesecake bite. A great, fresh, tasty alternative to other Thai places.

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! "Curry Pad Thai With Beef & Spicy Level 2 Please!!!" Best Thai food I've had hands down.

  • Phet V.

The food was awesome! I'm extremely picky when it comes to Thai food b/c I'm Thai myself so it is hard to compare to mom's cooking. And I'm very picky but am always curious to try the pad thai at every Thai restaurant I visit; and this place met my expectations. The taste was right on. A little too sweet for my taste but the savory aspect definitely balanced that out. Mine was hot, spicy, and a little tangy that tingled every part of my palate. The ground peanuts on the side definitely added a slight texture that is desired in every pad thai. It was very affordable, delicious, and very authentic. I will definitely go back! p.s. everything is made to order in front of you just like at home, a definite plus :)
